Tree of life
A fine quality and unusual mourning ring dated 1782. The high carat gold tapered shank supports a navette compartment set with a ground of vibrant crimson foil. The foil is surmounted by a miniature tree of life executed in macerated hair within a rose-cut diamond swagged surround. The scene is covered by a domed crystal. The tree of life represented the afterlife and the connection between the earth and heaven. To reverse the details of the deceased : Joseph Jennings Obt. 2 Jan 1782 At. 57. Joseph Jennings, hardwareman, lived in Fenchurch St., London. A copy of his will accompanies the ring. The ring is size P and 1/2 [US 7 and 3/4] and the head of the ring measures 1 and 1/4 inches by 3/4 of an inch. Substantial and immaculate.
