Sempre rinova

Most poignant mourning pendant circa 1770 – 1780. The pendant is high carat gold. The obverse depicts two hovering cherubs on a blush-pink enamel ground holding a garland over a funerary urn inscribed SW. The cherubs are surrounded by a motto on a white enamel ground : Sempre rinova ne mio cuore la stima il rammarico et dolore meaning ‘esteem, regret and suffering are always renewed in my heart.’ The reverse has a locket compartment surrounded by a motto on a black enamel ground : In memory of the best parent and most valuable friend. The pendant measures 1 and 1/8 inches by 3/4 of an inch. Beautiful quality, heart wrenching mottos.
