Sans changement

A fine quality enamel heart-shaped aristocratic betrothal pendant, circa 1700. The obverse depicts a pair of flaming hearts bound together by a chain, on a sky blue ground, above clouds. The hearts are surmounted by the French motto : Sans changement [without change]. The symbolism represents eternal love, two hearts bound together forever. The reverse has entwined initials surmounted by a ducal coronet. The pendant measures 1 and 1/8 inches by one inch. It is beautifully executed and immaculate.
