Ruby skull ring

A most unusual memento mori skull ring dated 1764. The high carat gold ring has a central compartment with a skull emblem painted on vellum under densely faceted rock crystal, shrouded in mystery. The details of the deceased are in gold capitals on the hoop, reserved on a black enamel ground : R. Andrews Ob. 28 Dec 1764 Ae.83. The skull is in a surround of table-cut rubies in foiled settings. The ring is size N [US 6 and 1/2] and the head of the ring measures 2/3 of an inch by 1/2 an inch. Fine quality and in completely original condition.
