Indian Maharaja’s daughter
I was enchanted by this child the minute I set eyes on her. A superbly executed enamel portrait in an 18 carat gold frame set with old-cut diamonds, natural untreated sapphires and natural pearls. The subject is an Indian Maharaja’s daughter, dressed in a pink sari and wearing pearl earrings. The portrait is broodingly atmospheric and captures the innocence of the small child with her hair unkempt and serious gaze. The pendant measures 1 and 3/4 inches by 1 and 3/4 inches and is immaculate. The piece is English, so possibly a portrait of Sophia Duleep Singh, [1876 – 1948], daughter of Maharajah Duleep Singh. Sophia was half Indian and raised in the U.K. Her godmother was Queen Victoria. One of my favourite purchases so far this year.
