Reverse intaglio crystal cat

A beautifully carved reverse intaglio crystal of a bicoloured feline with black markings on its nose, set to a 15 carat gold brooch, circa 1880. The technique of reverse intaglio crystal carving required great skill, first carving out a domed rock crystal in intaglio and then painting the carving in fine detail. The effect achieved is photo-realistic. The cat is depicted wearing a gold bell collar, its nose pressed against the crystal. The brooch measures 1 and 3/4 inches by 1.5 inches. In fitted case and immaculate.
