Remember the giver
Fine quality high carat gold posy hoop with unusual elliptical grooving to the exterior of the band, circa 1680. The ring is inscribed to interior with the motto : Remember the giver in Roman capitals. Within the hoop of a betrothal ring at this time is was customary to inscribe a motto or poesie consisting of a romantic sentiment. Posy rings were frequently alluded to in literature. Herrick in his Hesperides writes :
What posies for our wedding rings,
What gloves we’ll give and ribbonings!
And in his Church Miserie :
Indeed, at first, man was a treasure;
A box of jewels, shop of rarities,
A ring whose posie was my pleasure.
This posy ring is size M and 1/2 [US 6 and 1/4] and the hoop is 1/4 of an inch wide. It weighs 4 grams. In immaculate and most wearable condition.
