Let pitty move thy heart to love

Let pitty move thy heart to love

A mid-17th century silver heart-shaped locket in two parts forming a shallow compartment. The iconography on the obverse of the locket subtly alludes to the martyrdom of Charles 1st. An English rose formed from hearts has been cut and it is framed by a laurel wreath, which was the earliest form of the crown of immortality. To reverse the motto : Let pitty move thy heart to love. Beneath the script, tears. As Charles 1st declared on the scaffold : I go from a corruptible to an incorruptible crown, where no disturbance can be. The heart measures 1 and 1/4 inches by one inch. Quite a unique little Royalist piece.
