Pink topaz repoussé necklace
A rather good example of a repoussé necklace, circa 1840. Repoussé was a decorative technique in which parts of the design were raised in relief from the back using hammers and punches. Definition and detail were then added to the front by chasing or engraving. The name repoussé is derived from the French pousser – to push forward. Here the high carat gold repoussé work is in the form of flowers surmounted by stars, an incredibly difficult effect to achieve. The necklace is set with vibrant foil backed pink topaz with girandole drops. It is 17 inches long and the repoussé chain section is 2/3 of an inch wide. The central pink topaz set section is four inches long and 2.5 inches long including the girandole drops. In absolutely immaculate condition and as vibrant as the day it was made. Gorgeous thing.
