Ferdinand Erhart bat brooch
A distinctively stylish silver bat brooch by Ferdinand Erhart, French, circa 1908. Erhart had been experimenting with different metalworking techniques. Here the silver has been treated with acids so that it has acquired a dark oxidized colour and its structure now resembles the skin of a bat. Similar examples of Erhart’s bat jewellery are in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. The bat with outstretched wings measures 2 and 1/2 inches by 3/4 of an inch.
