Berlin iron cross

Berlin iron cross

During the first half of the 19th century, fer de Berlin, cast iron jewellery, achieved world renown. Thanks to superb designs and a perfected method of production, small works of art were created in a base metal that had formerly only been used for architectural and industrial  applications. This is a lacy Berlin iron cross, circa 1830 on a Berlin chain. The centre depicts a Christ figure on a polished steel backplate. It measures 3 inches by 2 and 1/2 inches and the chain is 30 inches long. It is in immaculate, rust free condition.
