This is a most extraordinary piece of jewellery, in 18 carat gold, mid-19th century, a testament to the skill and ingenuity of the Victorian goldsmith. The outer case is an elegant and substantial fob seal, engraved with the letter ‘N’ in Gothic script. It opens to reveal an inner double vinaigrette compartment in which to place a perfume impregnated sponge, and then opens again to reveal a ring hidden within. The ring is also 18 carat gold and set with a hand incised agate armorial crest. The fob can be worn on a chain, with or without the ring inside and measures 1 and 2/3 inches by 3/4 of an inch. The ring is size N and 1/2 [US 6 and 3/4] and the crest measures 1/2 an inch by 1/2 an inch. Fabulous quality, rare and immaculate.
