A frog

An amusing reverse carved crystal of a frog on a lily pad, circa 1900, set to a silver brooch. First frog I’ve seen in this medium! Essex crystal carvings were created from a rock crystal cabochon on which an image was then reverse carved and  painted, to give the impression of a three dimensional creature encapsulated in the cabochon when viewed from above. The brooch measures 1 and 1/8 inches by 3/4 of an inch and is expertly carved and immaculate.
