Death and rebirth
A fine quality Swiss enamel ring, probably Geneva, circa 1830. It is high carat gold and enamelled fully round with emblems of death and rebirth – a butterfly representing the soul, rebirth and hope, a dove with convolvulus in its beak symbolising peace and repose and carnations, symbolic of a woman’s love in the language of flowers. The ring is size Q [US 8] and the hoop is 1/3 of an inch wide. There is an unidentifiable gold mark on one rim. Absolutely charming. For a ring with similar enamel work see plate 421 in Scarisbrick’s Historic Rings.
