Ref  EE5   Hope

A drole Stuart crystal set to a gold bracelet clasp, dated 1708. The high carat gold clasp contains a compartment with a weave of brown hair surmounted by colourful enamel devices. A smiling cherub sits on a coffin holding an anchor, symbol of hope and rests his arm on a skull. The coffin is inscribed : Hope. To either side of the coffin are the gold wirework initals of the deceased : JC. The crystal is covered by a faceted rock crystal. To reverse the details of the deceased :  JC dyed 20th June 1708 Aged 31. The crystal measures 3/4 of an inch by 3/4 of an inch.Wonderfully macabre 17th century humour, it made me smile.
