Ref  EA1  Prince Augustus, Duke Of Sussex

A portrait ring circa 1820, of Prince Augustus, Duke of Sussex, [1773 - 1843]. The story of Prince Augustus, the only previous Duke of Sussex, is a tale of family breakdown and two illegal weddings. Augustus was born in 1773,  the ninth child of King George III. A bookish and sensitive boy, Augustus's severe asthma prevented him from following a naval career and the king sent him to Rome for his health. It was there that Augustus met the Catholic Lady Augusta Murray. His first act was to tie Lady Augusta’s shoelace for her. After that the two became intimate, exchanging love letters in which they referred to each other as Goosey and Gussy. They married in April 1793. This contravened the provisions of the Royal Marriages Act of 1772 and the marriage was declared void by the King. Augustus's children were deemed to be illegtimate. Family relationships were strained until eight years later when in November 1801 Prince Augustus Frederick had the title of Duke of Sussex conferred onto him. The title though did not pass to Augustus’s wife and children and the couple went their separate ways that same year. It was not Augustus’s last entanglement with the Royal Marriage Act. In 1831 he married Lady Cecilia Gore. Once more he had failed to seek royal approval but they stayed together until his death in 1843.  Since Augustus’s death the title of Duke of Sussex had remained vacant. There has never previously been a Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle is the first to hold the title. The bifurcated gold shank on this ring supports a compartment set with a micro-ivory carving of the Duke on a cobalt blue glass ground, under domed crystal and within a cross-hatch engraved surround. The ring is size K and 1/2 [US 5 and 3/8] and the head of the ring measures 2/3 of an inch by 1/2 an inch. Beautifully executed micro-ivory carving, fine quality and immaculate.
