Ref  AC2   King Charles Memento Mori Heart

An amuletic silver heart-shaped locket circa 1649, in two parts forming a shallow compartment for a scent-impregnated sponge. It is inscribed on one side : Prepared bee to follow me above initials CR for Carolus Rex [King Charles] and on the other side : I live and dy in loyalty above a heart pierced by arrows shedding a drop of blood. To interior a stamped portrait of the king and the Latin motto : Martyr populy, [martyr of the people]. Such lockets were made for Royalist supporters following the execution of Charles on 30th January, 1649. It measures 3/4 of an inch by 3/4 of an inch.
