Ref  WD3   Chrysoberyl Plaque Ring

Fine quality Portuguese chrysoberyl ring from the late 18th century. The second half of the 18th century saw an influx of gemstones to Portugal from its new Brazilian mines and led to what might be called a riot of colour in jewels. Here a gold tapering shanks supports a plaque pavé-set with vibrant, foiled sea-green chrysoberyl in closed back settings, within a typically Portuguese gold bead surround. The close setting of the gemstones creates the illusion of an unbroken mass of light and the curve of the ring makes it very comfortable on the finger. It is size L and 1/2 [US 5 and 7/8] and the head of the ring measures 1 and 1/4 inches by 3/4 of an inch. Sparkling, perfectly colour matched chrysoberyl, immaculate condition. For similar, see the National Museum of Ancient Art's 18th century jewellery collection, Lisbon, Portugal.
