Ref  DW4   Lava Owl

A rather good lava carving of an owl, circa 1870, set to a gold pendant mount. Cameos carved from lava [limestone and other mined rocks from the volcanic Mount Vesuvius region] were popular tourist souvenirs in the 19th century. The softness of lava made it relatively easy to carve, especially in high relief. This three dimensional carving depicts an owl perched on a stack of books, flicking through pages with his talon. The pendant measures 2 and 1/8 inches by 1.5 inches. Wonderfully detailed carving, very 'Harry Potter'.
