Ref  DW1  The Martyr King

A rare French Royalist supporter's ring for King Louis XVI, circa 1793. The high carat gold tapered shank supports a compartment containing a weave of hair. Surmounting the hair are the elaborate gold initials LR for Le Roi, with a martyr's crown above. Following Louis's execution in 1793, his supporters believed that he died not only as a victim of political change, but as a defender of the Catholic faith, a holy martyr. The ring is size L [US 5 and 1/2] and the head of the ring measures 2 and 1/8 inches by 2/3 of an inch. Fine quality and so poignant.
