Ref  GH3  Roman Dolphin Intaglio Ring

A high carat gold Roman ring, circa 3rd century A.D. incised with a dolphin. The dolphin held a special place in the Roman world, viewed as a friend of humans, a lover of music, king of marine life and lord of the sea. Dophins were sacred to Venus and Apollo. Images of dolphins appear frequently on Romans statues, frescoes and paintings and it was considered unlawful to kill a dolphin. Numerous Roman myths recount the close relationship between dolphins and humans. The ring is size I [US 4 and 1/4] and cannot be sized. It is in fine, sturdy and most wearable condition 18 centuries later.
