Ref  BF4  Putti

A late 18th century pendant depicting putti attributed to Giuseppe Bonzanigo [1745 - 1820]. The carving is executed in boxwood. Boxwood has a fine grain and a high density making it suitable for carving on a miniature scale. Because of the diminuitive size of such carvings, they were created with the use of a microscope. Bonzanigo was an Italian furniture maker, sculptor and ornamentalist. His workshop produced finely carved boxwood pieces on all size scales for royalty and aristocracy. This high carat gold pendant is set with a microscopic boxwood carving of putti cavorting over a brazier, on a black ground and under a domed crystal. It measures 1.5 inches by 1 and 1/8 inches. The virtuoso miniature carving is immaculate.
