Ref  WM4   Hellenistic Erote

High carat gold Hellenistic erote pendant, circa 1st century. The erotes were a group of winged gods in classical mythology depicted as young cupids. They were associated with love and formed part of Aphrodite's retinue. This winged erote wears a granulated strap to hold his quiver and bears an apple, a symbol of Aphrodite. A particularly well modelled erote, he measures 3/4 of an inch by 1/3 of an inch and was obviously much treasured as he has been housed in a 19th century fitted case. The erote has survived in very fine and undamaged condition. For other examples of Hellenistic gold erote jewels, see the Metropolitan Museum collection, New York.
