Ref  AG1  Unto the End I'll Be Your Friend

High carat gold mourning hoop, circa 1680. The exterior of the band depicts an enamel skull device set amidst thistles, thistle flowers and acanthus leaves, all on a black enamel ground. The thistle motif symbolised earthly sorrow and Christ's crown of thorns and the acanthus the heavenly garden. To interior is a most unsual motto : Unto the end Ile be your freind [sic]. This spelling is typical of the non-standardised spelling of the era. The ring is size O and 1/2 [US 7 and 1/4] and the band is 1/8 of an inch wide. In fine and most wearable condition.
