Ref  LF6  Medieval Heart-shaped Sapphire Ring

A fine quality  high carat gold medieval ring set with a domed cabochon sapphire, English, 13th century. Unusually the gold setting is heart-shaped. This ring was more than just an expensive, fashionable jewel. Medieval authors ascribed magical and talismanic properties to gemstones. Sapphires were believed by to promote chastity, peace and reconciliation. This particular celestial blue colour was described by the writer Bartholomeus Anglicus, [circa 1200 - 1272] as 'most like Heaven in fair weather'. The ring is size K and 1/2 [US 5 and 3/8]. It is in amazingly fine and wearable condition some 750 years on.  For a similar heart-shaped medieval ring, see Plate 14A in Oman's British Rings.
