Ref  LF2    2nd Duke of Northumberland

Fine quality 18 carat gold and enamel mourning ring, dated 1817. It commemorates the life of Lieutenant General Hugh Percy, 2nd Duke of Northumberland [1742 - 1817]. The ring is inscribed on the outer hoop on a black enamel ground : In Memory Of  in Gothic script, with the Duke's enamel crest of a crescent surmounted by a ducal crown. The interior is inscribed : Ob: 10 July 1817 AE 74. Lord Percy was sole heir to one of the greatest estates in England. He served as an officer in the British Army and fought in the American War of Independence at Lexington, Concord and Long Island. Notorious for his bad temper, Percy died suddenly of rheumatic gout in 1817. The Duke is buried in the Northumberland Vault within Westminster Abbey. The ring is size S [US 9 and 1/8] and in its original fitted case. A rare historic ring.
