Ref  NN1  Georgian Vinaigrette Locket

Fine quality 18 carat gold French vinaigrette locket, circa 1820, of a particularly neat and wearable size to hang on a chain. The vinaigrette was a most necessary adjunct to the toilette of the early 19th century. If its sponge was soaked in vinegar, its original use, it could help prevent the wearer from fainting. The addition of bergamot, lavender or rose water masked unpleasant odours on the streets of Paris or London. The exterior of this vinaigrette is ribbed on both sides and decorated with floral motifs. To interior there is an ornate openwork grille which hinges open to insert a sponge. There are French goldmarks and control marks to lid, interior and side. It weighs a substantial 15 grams and measures 1 and 1/8 inches by 3/4 of an inch. Immaculate.
