Ref  MK2   Memento Mori White Enamel Skull Ring

A fine quality, early example of a memento mori skull ring, dated 1686. The weighty and substantial high carat gold hoop is decorated with a stark white enamel skull motif [depicted by eye sockets, nasal cavity and teeth]. To interior in Italic script are the details of the deceased : F.G. Obt. 6 Octo : 86. The ring is size Q and 1/2 [US 8 and 1/4] and the hoop is 1/4 of an inch wide. I have never had this particular model of a memento mori ring, with a central simple white skull motif and no further adornment, in such virtually pristine and unworn condition. I cannot find a parallel example in museum collections or on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database.
