Ref  RD6  Memento Mori Skull Ring

A fine quality and substantial high carat gold memento mori skull ring, dated 1723. The exterior of the hoop is engraved with a skull device [depicted by eye sockets, naval cavity and teeth] amidst thistles, thistle flowers and acanthus leaves on a black enamel ground. The thistle motif symbolised earthly sorrow and Christ's crown of thorns and the acanthus the heavenly garden. To interior the details of the deceased : M.P. Obt. 19 Aug. 1723 aet 47. The ring is size N and 1/2 [US 6 and 3/4] and the hoop is 1/8 of an inch wide. In extremely fine, original and most wearable condition. There are similar skull rings in most major museum jewellery collections.
