Ref  WL2   Gustav III of Sweden

A Royalist supporter's portrait miniature ring dated 1789, depicting Gustav III of Sweden [1746-92] as a child. Gustav is remembered as being an Enlightened Despot, modelling his court on Versailles. His mission was to make Sweden a great European power once again, but in March 1792 he was shot at a masked ball by conspirators who viewed him as a tyrant. He died of his wounds two weeks' later at the age of 46. The incident became the subject of Verdi's opera Un Ballo in Maschera [A Masked Ball]. The ring is 18 carat gold with a full set of Swedish hallmarks to reverse. The tapering shank supports a compartment with a portrait miniature set under domed crystal and within a natural pearl surround. Gustav is depicted wearing a powdered wig en queue and a light blue sash of the nation's highest ranking order of chivalry, the Royal Order of the Seraphim. The ring is size N [US 6 and 1/2] and the head of the ring measures one inch by 3/4 of an inch. A charming and well executed miniature of an unusual subject.
