Ref  AJG5   The First Prime  Minister - Sir Robert Walpole

Robert Walpole is considered to be Britain’s first prime minister. The Whig statesman dominated politics during the reigns of George I and George II and remains the longest serving prime minister in British history. Walpole [1676 - 1745] was described by contemporary opponents as the ‘Screen-Master General’, adept at pulling all the political strings. He was First Lord of the Treasury for over twenty years, an unusually long period in office by any standard. Walpole lived at 10 Downing Street from 1735, having insisted that it become the residence of the First Lord of the Treasury, rather than being given to him personally. This portrait ring is circa 1726, when he was made a Garter Knight. The high carat gold ribbed shank contains a watercolour miniature portrait of  Walpole in brown wig and white stock, wearing the blue Garter sash, under crystal. The reverse of the ring is decorated with the Garter Star. The ring is size J [US 4 and 5/8] and the head of the ring measures 2/3 of an inch by 1/2 an inch. Lousy photo of a finely executed miniature, gorgeous ring and immaculate.
