Ref MB7 Memento Mori Skull Ring
A substantial high carat gold and unsually early memento mori skull ring, dated 1689. The exterior of the hoop is engraved with a skull device amidst thistles, thistle flowers and acanthus leaves. The thistle motif symbolised earthly sorrow and Christ's crown of thorns and the acanthus the heavenly garden. To interior the details of the deceased :

. The ring is size Q and 1/2 [US 8 and 1/4] and the hoop is 1/4 of an inch wide. This is the best example I have seen of this type of gold skull ring, including those in museum collections - it is completely original, weighty, beautifully engraved and in as crisp and fine condition as the day it was made.
