Ref  NJ3   Georgian Rebus Pendant

A Georgian rebus pendant, circa 1800. A rebus is a puzzle where sentiments are expressed by a combination of images and letters to convey a secret message. The gilt metal frame encloses a verre eglomise panel inscribed with the rebus : J La [key] des [hearts] - 'I have the key to the hearts'. The plaque measures 2 and 1/4 inches by 2 inches and the suspension chain is one inch long. Rare and so charming.
