Ref  AM6  17th Century Skeletal

A fine quality, substantial and very early example of a memento mori hoop, dated 1676. This type of mourning ring is known as a skeletal, as a full skeleton on a ground of  black enamel encircles the gold outer hoop, along with other emblems of mortality -  crossed bones, a thistle flower and co-joined hearts. The ring is inscribed to interior : L.A. Obt. 3 Apr 76. The ring is size N [US 6 and 1/2] and the hoop is 1/8 of an inch wide. It is in very fine and original condition with the majority of its original enamel intact. There are similar examples in most major museum jewellery collections.
