Ref  GS1  Memento Mori Skull Ring

A superior and substantial example of a memento mori skull ring, dated 1701. The high carat gold hoop is decorated in black enamel with a skull motif [with teeth] amidst thistles and thistle flowers. In mourning iconography the thistle symbolised earthly sorrow and the crown of thorns. To interior the details of the deceased : R.L. Obt. 17 Sept. 1701 aeta 62, followed by a cross symbol. The ring is size S and 1/4 [US 9 and 1/2] and the hoop is 1/8 of an inch wide. In completely original and extremely fine condition, with original enamel intact.
