Ref  WL6   Fetish Group

A mid-19th century fetish group, consisting of three figas in coral and gold and a carved coral foot. Fetish refers to the attribution of protective and magical qualities to inanimate objects. Coral was regarded as the most potent protective material. The figa hand was an Italian apotropaic amulet of ancient origin used for protection against the jettatura [evil eye] and the damage caused by the jealous and covetous gaze of another, to which children and animals were deemed particularly susceptible. The foot charm was used as a cure for cramp. Two figas are carved coral surmounted by gold tops. The third figa is unusually a gold watch key. The carved coral foot has a diamond bale. The group are two inches long, 1.5 inches wide and immaculate.
