Ref  CH6  Tabby Cat

A fine quality and well executed reversed intaglio crystal of a tabby cat set to a high-carat gold brooch, circa 1900. The carving is characteristic of the work of the Pradier family, who made a speciality of portraying domestic animals. There is a stylistically similar carving of a Collie dog by the Pradiers in an identical mount in the British Museum. The technique of reverse intaglio crystal carving required great skill, first carving out a domed natural rock crystal in intaglio and then painting the carving in fine detail. The completed carving was often backed with mother-of-pearl. The effect achieved is photo-realistic. The brooch measures one inch by one inch and is technically adept and immaculate.
