Ref  GL6   Georgian Mourning Eye Miniature

Finely executed and evocative Georgian eye miniature, circa 1790. The gold pendant/brooch  mount contains a watercolour miniature of a female eye with brown iris, in the style of Richard Cosway. The eye's gaze is piercing and the sitter's face is obscured by clouds, symbolic of mourning. These most intimate portraits were at the heart of very private exchanges in the late 18th century, encapsulating loyalty, love and in this case, loss. The reverse of the pendant contains a weave of plaited brown hair, under crystal. The pendant is 1.5 inches long and one inch wide. An enigmatic and completely original Georgian eye miniature.
