Ref  SV4   Portuguese Aquamarine Ring

A rather sumptuous Portuguese aquamarine ring, circa 1780. Inspired by the wonderful array of colourful gems available from their ultramarine settlements during the 18th century, Portuguese jewellers densely pavé-set rings, enabling the light to draw to maximum effect the refraction, colour and fire from the gemstones, especially when seen in flickering candlelight. Here a tapering gold shank supports a cluster head of foiled, vibrant blue aquamarines, within a gold bead border characteristic of Portuguese jewels. The ring is size N [US 6 and 1/2] and the head of the ring measures 1 and 1/4 inches by one inch. I have had a number of these rings over the years in chrysoberyl, rock crystal and topaz, but this is only the second example I have acquired in aquamarine. Luscious colour and immaculate. For similar in form, see plate 123 in D'Orey's Five Centuries of Jewellery [former Portuguese convent collections].
