Ref  HS3    Berlin Iron Ring

A most unusual Berlin iron ring, dated 1914. The ring is gold, inset with a band of Berlin iron inscribed : Zur erinngerung an schwere tage 1914, [In memory of dire days]. I have had a number of Berlin iron rings from this period inscribed : Gold gab ich fur eisen, but never one with this particularly poignant inscription. It alludes to the theatre of war on the Western Front in 1914, where tens of thousands of young men on both sides tragically lost their lives. The ring is size L [US 5 and 1/2] and the band tapers in width from 1/3 of an inch wide front centre to 1/4 inch wide at reverse. Immaculate.
