Ref FH2 Decade Ring
High carat gold decade ring, circa 1840. The decade ring takes its name from the fact that it has ten nodules ornamenting the shank. These rings were used in the same way as a rosary . A 'Hail Mary' (Ave Maria) prayer was said for each of the nodules and then an 'Our Father' (Paternoster) for the bezel at the centre of the ring. Here the bezel is set with an enamelled Faith, Hope and Charity symbol, the flaming heart with golden drops of blood. The ring is size P [US 7 and 1/2] and the head of the ring measures 1/3 of an inch by 1/3 of an inch. It is in immaculate condition. For other examples of decade rings, see the Victoria and Albert Museum jewellery collection.
