Ref  RC2  Caesar Domitian

A Neo-classical cameo carved in the rare medium of oyster shell, circa 1820, in a later gold channel set mount. The cameo portrays Titus Flavius Caesar Domitianus Augustus, Emperor of Rome from 81 to 96 A.D. During his reign religious and cultural propaganda fostered the cult of personality and the emperor was perceived as a demi-god. Domitian's reign ended in 96 A.D. when he was assassinated by courtiers in a palace coup. This cameo depicts Domitian in profile with wreathed crown. The ring is size Q [US 8] and the head of the ring measures one inch by 3/4 of an inch. Fine gem engraving, immaculate condition.
