Ref RC2 Caesar Domitian
A Neo-classical cameo carved in the rare medium of oyster shell, circa 1820, in a later gold channel set mount. The cameo portrays Titus Flavius Caesar Domitianus Augustus
, Emperor of Rome from 81 to 96 A.D. During his reign religious and cultural propaganda fostered the cult of personality and the emperor was perceived as a demi-god. Domitian's reign ended in 96 A.D. when he was assassinated by courtiers in a palace coup. This cameo depicts Domitian in profile with wreathed crown. The ring is size Q [US 8] and the head of the ring measures one inch by 3/4 of an inch. Fine gem engraving, immaculate condition.
