United in death

A Georgian double mourning hoop remembering the lives of a husband and wife who died within 3 months of each other in 1809.  To interior a full set of hallmarks for 18 carat gold and London 1809. The exterior hoop is inscribed in gold letters reserved on a black enamel ground : Stephen Hall Esq. Died 14 Aug 1809 Aged 82 and Mary Hall Died 12 May 1809 Aged 76. Stephen Hall was a partner of the bankers Hankey & Co. of Fenchurch Street. He lived in Mile End Road at New Grove, where his house had a library whose inventory survives. His Land Tax was based on a rack rent of £100, indicating a substantial property and one of the largest in the area. In 1790 he had one male servant.  In 1764 Stephen Hall married Mary Grace. They are not known to have had any children.  Both were buried in the family vault in the churchyard at Foots Cray. In his will Stephen Hall left generous legacies to many members of his wife’s family. The ring is size K and 1/2 [US 5 and 3/8] and the band is 1/3 of an inch wide. Very fine quality and substantial, with its original enamel intact.
