Sir Christopher Wren
‘If you seek his memorial, look about you’.
An early 18th century high carat gold slide enclosing a very fine portrait executed in enamel of the architect Sir Christopher Wren, the man who rebuilt London. At the time it was fashionable to wear jewels depicting royalty and notables. Recognised as the most significant architect in British history, Wren [1632 – 1723] was also a scientist, astronomer and mathematician. In 1666 the Great Fire of London destroyed much of the medieval city, providing a great opportunity for Wren. He designed the iconic St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Royal Observatory at Greenwich and many other buildings including Trinity College Library in Cambridge and the facade of Hampton Court Palace. Wren died on 25th February 1723. His gravestone in St Paul’s Cathedral has a Latin inscription which translates as : ‘If you seek his memorial, look about you.’ This slide can be worn on ribbon on the wrist or as a pendant with its detachable pendant bale. It measures. 3/4 of an inch by 2/3 of an inch. A very well executed portrait, immaculate.
