Ref  ADH2  Renaissance Ring

High carat gold Renaissance ring, mid-17th century. The gold hoop is engraved with floral and foliate motifs and supports a box bezel set with a vivid foiled green beryl, flanked by rose-cut diamonds. The arcaded sides were originally filled with black and white enamel, and a substantial amount of enamel remains intact on both the bezel and the hoop. This style, exemplifying the simpler styles that succeeded earlier, more elaborate Renaissiance rings, compares with those in the Cheapside Horde. The ring is size L and 1/2 [US 5 and 7/8] and can be sized, and the box bezel measures 1/3 of an inch by 1/3 of an inch. It is in extremely fine and wearable condition. For similar stylistic examples see Scarisbrick's Historic Rings and for an almost identical model in garnet, see the V&A Museum ring collection.
