Ref  NSN5   Princess Charlotte Mourning Ring

A mourning ring for Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales, only the second example I have had in 30 years. Gold hoop with black enamelled outer face and high relief text in capitals : PRINCESS CHARLOTTE OBT. NOVR. 6 1817. Æ: 21 and seven stars of immortality. The ring is size M and 1/2 [US 6 and 1/4] and the hoop is 1/4 of an inch wide. Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales [7th January 1796 – 6th November 1817], was the only child of George, Prince of Wales, [later  King George IV] and Caroline of Brunswick. Charlotte died at the young age of 21 after giving birth to a still-born son. Whereas her father, the Prince Regent was generally despised, the young princess was extremely popular and her death elicited a national outpouring of grief that was unprecedented in Britain. Her funeral drew massive mourning crowds on a scale similar to those who thronged to Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997.
