Ref  GL6   Voltaire

A French high carat gold portrait miniature ring, circa 1770. The ring has a rayed reverse and a compartment containing a finely executed watercolour portrait miniature under faceted crystal of the Enlightenment author, Francois-Marie Arouet, better known by his nom de plume, Voltaire. Voltaire's  famed works include the tragic play Zaïre, the historical study The Age of Louis XIV and the satirical novella Candide. Often at odds with French authorities over his politically charged works, he was twice imprisoned and spent many years in exile. This portrait is of a young Voltaire wearing a fashionably curled and powdered wig and white stock  jabot. The ring is size M [US 6] and can be sized, and the portrait measures 2/3 of an inch by 1/3 of a inch. Very fine quality portrait of a rare subject.
