Ref  MBL5  Bague au Firmament

Fine quality 18th century celestial ring, circa 1780. The high carat gold shank supports a plaque of royal blue enamel set with a central rose-cut diamond in a galaxy of diamond stars, within a pearl surround.  Such rings were known as bagues au Firmament [rings of the Heavens] as the celestial blue ground evoked the night sky and the diamonds sparkled like stars. The ring is size L [US 5 and 1/2] and can be sized and the plaque measures just over one inch by 3/4 of an inch. Immaculate.
