Ref  NS5   Bague au Firmament

Fine quality 18th century French celestial ring, circa 1780. The high carat gold shank supports a plaque of foiled royal blue glass densely set with rose-cut diamonds, within a rose-cut diamond surround. Such rings were known as bagues au Firmament [rings of the Heavens] as the celestial blue ground evoked the night sky and the diamonds sparkled like stars. Further symbolism on the ring indicates it would have been presented as a token of love. The shoulders of the ring are set with roses, the flower of love, and the plaque is set with diamond emblems d'amour, a pair of flaming torches. The ring is size J and 1/2 [US 5] and can be sized, and the plaque measures 1 and 1/8 inches by 3/4 of an inch. As the ring is curved it is very comfortable on the finger. A special 18th century celestial ring in immaculate condition.
