Ref  SB4   Portuguese Topaz Earrings

Rare Imperial Topaz earrings, Portuguese, third quarter of the 18th century. The earrings are in the form of dahlias, constructed in three layers of foil backed and faceted golden topaz, set silver. They measure one inch by one inch and  have their original reverse ear fittings. They are typical of 18th century Portuguese jewels whose form captured the colour and fire in gemstones, especially apparent in flickering candle light. These earrings are illustrated on plate 142 in Scarisbrick's Brilliant Impressions, An Exhibition of Antique Paste and Other Jewellery.
